Conflicts of Interest

The Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law and Studies (JCILS) is committed to ensuring transparency and integrity in the publication process. All participants in the publication process—authors, reviewers, and editors—must disclose any potential conflicts of interest.


1. Definition of Conflict of Interest

A conflict of interest exists when professional judgment concerning a primary interest (such as the validity of research) may be influenced by a secondary interest, including but not limited to:

  • Financial relationships (funding, employment, consultancies, honoraria)
  • Personal relationships or rivalries
  • Academic competition or intellectual bias
  • Institutional affiliations

2. Responsibilities of Authors

Authors must:

  • Disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest related to their research
  • Include a Conflict of Interest statement in their manuscript
  • Clearly state if no conflicts exist by declaring:
    “The authors declare no conflict of interest.”

3. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers must:

  • Disclose any conflicts of interest before accepting a review assignment
  • Decline to review manuscripts where conflicts may affect objectivity
  • Maintain confidentiality and impartiality during the review process

4. Responsibilities of Editors

Editors must:

  • Avoid handling manuscripts where a conflict of interest exists
  • Assign alternative editors when necessary
  • Ensure a fair and unbiased review process

5. Management of Conflicts

When a conflict of interest is identified:

  • It will be evaluated by the editorial team
  • Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure impartial decision-making
  • Disclosed conflicts may be published alongside the article when relevant

6. Transparency

JCILS ensures that all disclosed conflicts of interest are handled transparently to maintain trust in the scholarly publication process.
